Metta Flutes Bore Inserts

These are the inserts I made to use with my wood lathe to create Native American Style Flutes. After some experimentation this is what I came up with. They are designed to work with a Live Center. Each size insert has a True Size side for perfect bores and a sized down side (about 1/32" smaller) for imperfect bores. I found that my bores were hardly ever perfect after routing and sanding, and the bore becomes less than round, although not visually. The sized down side allows for this inconsistency and keep me from forcing (and possible splitting) the flute putting it in or taking it out.

The 1/8" Lip distributes pressure evenly, as opposed to a tapered center fitting into the bore and wanting to wedge it apart. They insert about 5/8" into the bore allowing for greater stability. I also use these during glue-up to help center the bore halves on each other, and then remove once clamped up. Each end has a tapered hole to accept a live center. There are more images below showing more detail and my setup. These insert are available to purchase and are made-to-order. Email me with any questions.
Other sizes available upon request.

Many flute makers use this center and have been happy with it.
